Netzwerk Agnès Varda: Essayismen, Feminismen, Modernismen
Das renommierte 29. Internationale Bremer Symposium, veranstaltet vom CITY 46/Kommunalkino Bremen e.V. und der Filmwissenschaft an der Universität Bremen, hatte den Fokus „Netzwerk Agnès Varda: Essayismen, Feminismen, Modernismen“ und fand in Kooperation mit dem Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst e.V. im Rahmen von Arsenal on Location statt. Das kommt nicht von ungefähr: Im September 2009 hat das Arsenal Agnès Varda (1928–2019) eine auch überregional viel beachtete vollständige Retrospektive gewidmet, die sie am Eröffnungswochenende mit fünf Publikumsgesprächen persönlich begleitet hat. Wer dabei war, wird es nicht vergessen. Ihren Besuch in Berlin hat sie selbst in einer Episode ihres Films AGNÈS DE CI DE LÀ VARDA (2011) verewigt. Vardas Werk ist auch weiterhin im Arsenal präsent, wie z. B. 2022 im von Birgit Kohler kuratierten Programm „Passagen“ im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Das dritte Leben der Agnès Varda“ der silent green Film Feld Forschung, aber auch regelmäßig in unterschiedlichsten thematischen Reihen.
Agnès Varda war eine außergewöhnlich kreative und produktive Persönlichkeit: Über sechs Jahrzehnte lang erweiterte sie als Wegbereiterin des modernen Films die künstlerischen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten des Kinos. Ihre Filme und Fotografien zeugen von einer überaus persönlichen, experimentierfreudigen Handschrift, die zwischen dokumentarischem Realismus und poetischer Fiktion changiert. Mit über 70 Jahren begann Varda noch eine dritte Karriere: als Installationskünstlerin. Die Figur des Netzwerks ergibt sich fast schon organisch aus Vardas Schaffen, das sich durch die Verquickung ihrer modernistischen Affinitäten mit ihren feministischen Anliegen und essayistischen Ansätzen auszeichnet.
In diesem Sinne blickt das 29. Bremer Filmsymposium über Autorin und Werk hinaus auf Vardas soziale und ästhetische Gefüge, auf Kollaborationen und Beziehungen. Das Filmprogramm, das eine Auswahl ihrer Filme aufwies und auch Verbindungslinien zu den Arbeiten anderer Filmschaffender ziog, wurde flankiert von einem von Birgit Kohler (Arsenal) moderierten Podiumsgespräch mit dem Produktionsforscher Dennis Göttel (Berlin) und der Filmemacherin Eva Knopf (Bremen) über historische und zeitgenössische Modi der Filmproduktion als Manufaktur, in Anlehnung an Vardas Filmproduktionsweisen. Das wissenschaftliche Vortragsprogramm versammelten Beiträge aus Deutschland, Großbritannien, Frankreich, der Schweiz, der Türkei und den USA.
The renowned 29th International Bremen Symposium, organised by CITY 46/Kommunalkino Bremen e.V. and the Department of Film Studies at the University of Bremen, focused on the "Agnès Varda Network: Essayisms, Feminisms, Modernisms" and took place in cooperation with Arsenal - Institute for Film and Video Art e.V. as part of Arsenal on Location. This is no coincidence: in September 2009, Arsenal dedicated a complete retrospective to Agnès Varda (1928-2019), which was also highly regarded beyond the region, and which she personally accompanied with five public talks on the opening weekend. Those who were there will not forget it. She immortalised her visit to Berlin in an episode of her film AGNÈS DE CI DE LÀ VARDA (2011). Varda's work is still present at Arsenal, for example in 2022 in the "Passages" program curated by Birgit Kohler as part of the exhibition "The Third Life of Agnès Varda" at silent green Film Feld Forschung, but also regularly in a wide variety of thematic series.
Agnès Varda (1928–2019) was an extraordinarily creative and productive personality: for over six decades, she expanded cinema's possibilities for artistic expression, helping pave the way for modern film. Her films and photographs testify to a highly personal signature that shows a joy in experimentation, shifting between documentary realism and poetic fiction. At the age of over 70, Varda began a third career: as an installation artist. The motif of the network emerges almost organically from Varda’s work, which is characterized by how she combines her modernist affinities with her feministic concerns and essayistic approaches. With this in mind, the 29th Bremen Film Symposium looked beyond just the auteur and her work to examine the social and aesthetic structures within which Varda was active and her collaborations and relationships. The film program both included a selection of her films and forged connections to the work of other filmmakers. It was flanked by a panel discussion with production researcher Dennis Göttel (Berlin) and filmmaker Eva Knopf (Bremen), moderated by Birgit Kohler (Arsenal) about historical and contemporary modes of film production as a form of manufacture in keeping with Varda’s own methods of film production. The academic program brought together lectures from Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Turkey and the US.

Die großartigen Arbeiten interessanter und origineller Filmemacher*innen aus allen Ecken der Welt, die im Mainstreamkino keinen Platz finden, liegen uns am Herzen. Im Zentrum unserer Arbeit steht ein sorgfältig und leidenschaftlich kuratiertes Programm, ausgewählt in einem thematischen, geografischen und formalen Variantenreichtum aus über 125 Jahren Filmgeschichte und flankiert mit Stimmen aus Wissenschaft, Kultur und Gesellschaft.
Das CITY 46 bietet mehr als ein Kino – wie es die Grundidee kommunaler Filmarbeit ist. Seit unserer Gründung 1974 als Verein zur Förderung der Kinokultur schätzen wir unsere Mitglieder als eine wichtige Basis für die filmkulturelle Arbeit. Ausgestattet mit digitaler und analoger Technik bieten unsere beiden Kinosäle und ein Seminarraum Platz für Austausch und Begegnungen mit Regisseur*innen, Fachleuten und Engagierten.
Für das „Mitmach-Kino“ CITY 46 bedeutet Kinoarbeit auch soziale und ästhetische Intervention, um Entwicklungen und Impulse aus Wissenschaft, Gesellschaftspolitik und Stadtkultur aufgreifen und ihnen einen zentralen und sicheren Raum in der Stadt zu geben.
Und wir sind nicht allein: Gemeinsam mit anderen Institutionen und Initiativen setzen wir gesellschaftspolitische Schwerpunkte, die sich auch an den Interessen der Einwohner:innen von Bremen und umzu orientieren. So ist das CITY 46 auch Heimat des ehrenamtlich organisierten queerfilm festivals (seit 1994), des Bremer Kinder- & Jugendfilmfests KIJUKO (seit 2013) und des Internationalen Bremer Filmsymposiums (seit 1995). The compelling works of interesting and original filmmakers from all parts of the world, which find no place in mainstream cinema, mean the world to us. At the core of our work is a diligently and passionately curated program selected in a thematic, geographical and formal diversity from over 125 years of film history, and accompanied by voices from science, culture and society.
The CITY 46 offers more than just a movie theater - as is the basic idea of municipal film work. Since our foundation in 1974 as an association for the promotion of cinema culture, we always have valued our members as an important basis for our local film culture work. Equipped with digital and analog technology, two cinemas and a seminar room offer space for exchange and encounters with filmmakers, experts and people committed.
For the “participatory” CITY 46, cinema work also means social and aesthetic intervention in order to take up developments and impulses from social policy, science and urban culture in a timely manner and to give them a central and safe space in the city.
And we are not alone: along with other institutions and initiatives, we shape socio-political discussions that are also aligning with the interests of the residents of Bremen and the surrounding area. In this way, the CITY 46 is also home to the voluntarily organized queerfilm festival Bremen (since 1994), the Bremen Children's & Youth Film Festival KIJUKO (since 2013) and the annual International Bremen Film Conference (since 1995).
