Die Akademie der Künste galt ab 1963 bis zur Eröffnung des ersten Kino Arsenal als Hauptspielstätte des Vereins. Das Programm „Architektur und Film“, kuratiert von Heinz Emigholz, geht zurück auf die Reihe „Experimentelle Filmgestaltung“, die Emigholz in den 1990ern im Arsenal präsentierte.
Im Rahmen von Arsenal on Location werden in der Akademie der Künste Emigholz‘ Filme SULLIVANS BANKEN (D 1993-2000) und GOFF IN DER WÜSTE (D 2003) gezeigt, die beide Ihre Premieren beim Forum der Berlinale hatten und im Verleih von arsenal distribution sind. „Alle Gebäude, die jemals waren und sind, sind das physische Symbol für den psychischen Zustand der Menschen. Jedes Gebäude steht für eine soziale Aktion“, schreibt Louis H. Sullivan in dem Essay "What is Architecture" von 1906. Stumm hat Emigholz die Gebäude der amerikanischen Architekten Louis H. Sullivan und Bruce Goff dokumentiert. Doch bei aller Funktionalität der Bauwerke ordnen Emigholz‘ Bilder Details immer wieder neu an und lassen die Möglichkeiten von Architektur für sich sprechen. Mit im Programm: THE FOUNTAINHEAD (USA 1949) von King Vidor. Zum Abschluss der zweitägigen Präsentation wird Heinz Emigholz einen Vortrag halten: Gibt es queere Architektur?
The Akademie der Künste served as the main venue for the association from 1963 until the opening of the first Arsenal cinema. The program "Architecture and Film," curated by Heinz Emigholz, traces back to the series "Experimental Film Design," which Emigholz presented at Arsenal in the 1990s.
As part of Arsenal on Location, Emigholz’s films SULLIVANS BANKEN (G 1993-2000) and GOFF IN DER WÜSTE (G 2003) will be shown at the Akademie der Künste. Both had their premieres at the Berlinale Forum and are distributed by arsenal distribution. "All buildings that have ever been and are, are the physical symbol for the mental state of people. Every building stands for a social action," writes Louis H. Sullivan in the 1906 essay "What is Architecture". In his films, Emigholz has documented the buildings of American architects Louis H. Sullivan and Bruce Goff silent. Yet, despite the functionality of the structures, Emigholz’s images repeatedly rearrange details and allow the possibilities of architecture to speak for themselves. Also included: THE FOUNTAINHEAD (USA 1949) by King Vidor. At the end of the two-day presentation, Heinz Emigholz will give a lecture: Is there a queer architecture?

Gegründet im Jahre 1696, gehört die Akademie der Künste in Berlin zu den ältesten europäischen Kulturinstituten. Sie ist eine internationale Gemeinschaft von Künstler*innen, die in den Sektionen Bildende Kunst, Baukunst, Musik, Literatur, Darstellende Kunst, Film- und Medienkunst organisiert sind.
Die Akademie der Künste ist ein Ausstellungs- und Veranstaltungsort, eine Stätte der Begegnung von Künstler*innen und Kunstinteressierten sowie der Debatte über Kunst und Kulturpolitik. Mit ihrem Veranstaltungsprogramm stellt sie der Öffentlichkeit künstlerische Positionen der Gegenwart vor, oft im Kontext mit dem kulturellen Erbe, das durch das umfangreiche interdisziplinäre Archiv der Akademie repräsentiert wird.
Die Akademie vergibt für herausragende künstlerische Leistungen Preise und im Rahmen der Jungen Akademie Stipendien. Im Vermittlungsprogramm KUNSTWELTEN bringt sie Kindern und Jugendlichen die Künste näher.
Mit dem Kino Arsenal, das in seiner Anfangszeit seine Filmprogramme in der Akademie zeigte, verbindet sie eine lange Geschichte.
Founded in 1696, the Akademie der Künste in Berlin is one of the oldest cultural institutes in Europe. It is an international community of artists and has a current total of 429 members in its six Sections (Visual Arts, Architecture, Music, Literature, Performing Arts, Film and Media Arts).
The Akademie der Künste is an exhibition and event location, a meeting place for artists and people interested in the arts, where public debates on art and cultural policy take place. A key part of the Academy are its Archives. With over 1,200 estates by artists and an extensive art collection and library, the Academy Archives are one of the most important interdisciplinary archives of 20th century art.The Academy awards a wide range of prizes for outstanding artistic achievements as well as for the promotion of artists. It involves young artists through its international scholarship programmes. In its KUNSTWELTEN (ART WORLDS) outreach programme, it brings the arts closer to children and young people in particular.
The Academy has a long history with the Arsenal, as the Academy was the venue in its early days.
