CHEAP PEOPLE ARE OTHER PEOPLE 1–5
Der Film CHEAP PEOPLE ARE OTHER PEOPLE 1–5 (2020) des Kunstkollektivs CHEAP montiert Samples, Wiederholungen und Zitate zu einem neuen Denken von Original und Kopie, Körper und Gegenüber, Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Ergänzt wird jede Folge durch einen Film aus dem Arsenal-Archiv – einem Ort, der Vaginal Davis vertraut ist: Von 2007 bis 2018 kuratierte sie dort ihre Reihe „Rising Stars, Falling Stars“. Ab Juli '25 ist monatlich eine Folge im Gropius Bau zu sehen.
Der Film läuft im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Vaginal Davis: Fabelhaftes Produkt“ im Gropius Bau, die das kollaborative Werk von Vaginal Davis würdigt (noch bis zum 14.9). Teil der Ausstellung ist auch die Installation „Choose Mutation“ des Kunstkollektivs CHEAP mit Fotografien von Annette Frick – sowie die Kinostühle aus dem Arsenal 2, dem früheren Ort von Davis’ Filmreihe.
The film CHEAP PEOPLE ARE OTHER PEOPLE 1-5 (2020) by the art collective CHEAP attempts to rethink the relationships between model and copy, past and present, one body and its neighbor through samples and repetitions. From July, one episode of the film will be shown each month, combined with a film from the Arsenal archive, which Ms. Davis is very familiar with: from 2007 to 2018, she presented finds from it in her “Rising Stars, Falling Stars” screenings.
The film is shown as a part of the exhibition „Vaginal Davis: Fabelhaftes Produkt“ at the Gropius Bau (until Sept 14). It provides an insight into Vaginal Davis' work, which has always been part of a collaborative context. Since her time in Berlin, Vaginal Davis has been part of the art collective CHEAP, whose installation „Choose Mutation“, with Photographs by Annette Frick, is part of the show.

Mitten in Berlin gelegen, ist der Gropius Bau ein lebendiger Ort für Begegnungen mit Kunst und miteinander. Als international bedeutendes Ausstellungshaus bietet er Raum für große Ausstellungen und Performances zeitgenössischer Künstler*innen. Austausch, Diskussion und das Zusammenbringen lokaler und globaler Perspektiven stehen im Mittelpunkt unterschiedlicher Veranstaltungen.
Künstlerinnen gestalten das Programm hier aktiv von innen mit: Sie zeigen nicht nur eigene Arbeiten, sondern entwickeln auch Themen- und Einzelausstellungen anderer Künstlerinnen oder arbeiten teilweise für mehrere Jahre in einem der Ateliers im Gropius Bau. So sind sie eng mit dem Haus verbunden und prägen es mit ihren Vorstellungen und Ideen.
Bei allem dient das Spiel als Vorschlag, wie wir in Zeiten zunehmender gesellschaftlicher Spannungen miteinander umgehen können: offen statt wertend, gemeinsam statt gegeneinander, Positionen und Perspektiven wechselnd. Diese Idee steht auch im Mittelpunkt des kostenlos zugänglichen Spielorts BAUBAU, der von der Künstlerin Kerstin Brätsch entwickelt wurde. Er lädt Kinder dazu ein, sich breit zu machen, laut zu sein, zu toben und die Räume immer wieder neu mitzugestalten – denn hier ist mehr erlaubt als verboten.
Located in the centre of Berlin, Gropius Bau is a lively place to encounter art and each other. The internationally renowned institution stages large-scale exhibitions and performances by contemporary artists. Its diverse events focus on exchange and discussion, bringing together local and global perspectives.
Here, artists shape the programme from within, not only showing their own work, but developing thematic or solo exhibitions of work by other artists. In some cases, they spend several years working in one of the Gropius Bau’s on-site studios, becoming deeply intertwined with the institution and shaping it with their ideas and vision.
In all of this, the notion of playing serves as a proposition for how we can engage with one another in times of increasing social tension: openly rather than judgmentally, with each other rather than against each other and playfully exchanging perspectives and positions. This idea also lies at the heart of BAUBAU, a play space for kids developed by artist Kerstin Brätsch and accessible free of charge. Here, kids are invited to take up space, make noise, let off steam and constantly reinvent a space where more is allowed than forbidden.
