Cineteca Nacional de Chile: Im Fokus: Chilenische Filme im Arsenal-Filmarchiv
Die Konferenz „Jornadas sobre cine: archivos recuperados“, organisiert von der Cineteca Nacional de Chile, dem Fachbereich „Cine y Realización Audiovisual“ der Universidad Diego Portales und dem Goethe-Institut, öffnet einen Raum für Begegnungen und Überlegungen zu zeitgenössischen Praktiken des Erhalts, der Erforschung und Aktivierung von audiovisuellen Archiven. Arsenal on Location bietet den Rahmen zu einem gemeinsamen Programm, das aktuelle Digitalisierungsprojekte chilenischer Filme aus dem Arsenal-Filmarchiv vorstellt. Beziehungen zu Chile bestehen seit Anfang der 70er Jahre, als Filmkopien zum Schutz vor der Zensur dem Arsenal übergeben wurden. Einige rare Kopien werden gegenwärtig im Inland gemeinsam mit dem Bundesarchiv und der DEFA-Stiftung sowie international mit der Elías Querejeta Zine Escola (Spanien), dem Vulnerable Media Lab der Queen’s University (Kanada) und der Cineteca Universidad de Chile digitalisiert. Zu den Titeln zählen u.a. AMUHUELAI-MI (María Luisa Mallet, 1971) und VOTO MÁS FUSIL (Helvio Soto, 1970).
The “Jornadas sobre cine: archivos recuperados” conference, organized by the Cineteca Nacional de Chile, the department “Cine y Realización Audiovisual” of the Universidad Diego Portales and the Goethe Institut, opens a space for encounters and reflections on contemporary practices of preservation, research and activation of audiovisual archives. Arsenal on Location provides the framework for a joint program that will present current digitization projects of Chilean films from Arsenal's archive. Relations with Chile have existed since the early 1970s, when film copies were handed over to Arsenal to protect them from censorship. Some rare copies are being digitized in Germany with the Federal Archive and the DEFA Foundation as well as in other countries with the Elías Querejeta Zine Escola (Spain), the Vulnerable Media Lab at Queen's University (Canada) and the Cineteca Universidad de Chile. The titles include AMUHUELAI-MI (María Luisa Mallet, 1971) and VOTO MÁS FUSIL (Helvio Soto, 1970).

Die „Jornadas sobre cine: archivos recuperados“ boten einen vielseitigen Austausch zwischen Studierenden, der Öffentlichkeit und einem Fachpublikum mit Vertreter*innen größerer und kleinerer, staatlicher wie auch privater audiovisueller Sammlungen. Das Abschlussprogramm markierte den Fokus der Veranstaltung auf wiederentdeckte Werke der chilenischen Filmgeschichte mit einer Vorführung des Films VOTO MÁS FUSIL (Helvio Soto, 1970). Eine 35-mm-Positivkopie mit deutschen Untertiteln befindet sich seit der Vorführung im Berlinale Forum 1971 im Archiv des Arsenal. In Chile existierte der Film hingegen nur noch in einer sehr schlechten Kopie. Eine Digitalisierung der Arsenal-Kopie wurde im Rahmen einer Kooperation beim Bundesarchiv durchgeführt. Die weitere digitale Bearbeitung erfolgte anschließend bei der Cineteca Nacional, in deren Kinos die Wiederaufführung am 13. August aufgrund des großen Andrangs parallel in zwei Sälen stattfand. Die Kinos befinden sich direkt unterhalb von La Moneda, dem Präsidentenpalast, der im Zentrum des blutigen Militärputsches am 11. September 1973, der zum Sturz von Salvador Allende führte, stand. VOTO MÁS FUSIL endet mit einer dokumentarischen Aufnahme von Allende, umfeiert vor La Moneda nach seiner Wahl zum Präsidenten im November 1970, was die Wiederaufführung an diesem Ort zu einer unvergesslichen Veranstaltung machte. The ‘Jornadas sobre cine: archivos recuperados’ offered a diverse exchange between students, the general public and an expert audience with representatives from large and small, state and private audiovisual collections. The closing programme marked the event's focus on rediscovered works from Chilean film history with a screening of the film VOTO MÁS FUSIL (Helvio Soto, 1970). A 35 mm positive copy with German subtitles has been in the Arsenal archive since its screening at the Berlinale Forum in 1971. In Chile, however, only a very poor copy of the film remained. The Arsenal copy was digitised as part of a collaboration with the Federal Archives. Further digital processing was then carried out at the Cineteca Nacional, where the re-release took place on 13 August in two cinemas simultaneously due to the large crowds. The cinemas are located directly below La Moneda, the presidential palace, which was at the centre of the bloody military coup on 11 September 1973 that led to the overthrow of Salvador Allende. VOTO MÁS FUSIL ends with a documentary recording of Allende being celebrated in front of La Moneda after his election as president in November 1970, which made the re-screening at this location an unforgettable event. Inaugurated in 2006, the Cineteca Nacional de Chile has played a fundamental role in the preservation and dissemination of Chilean cinema. Throughout its history, it has developed a robust technical and programmatic infrastructure that positions it as a national and regional reference in audiovisual preservation. Its work includes the rescue, conservation, and digitization of film, video, and digital materials, as well as the restoration and cataloging of works of high patrimonial value. Thanks to these efforts, it now safeguards more than 6,000 titles, many of which have been recovered and made available for cultural, educational, and research purposes.
In terms of access and valorization, the Cineteca has developed a sustained strategy of dissemination, research, and audience engagement with a decentralized approach. This work is reflected in a national program of Chilean cinema with over 25,000 screenings since its founding, an online platform offering free access to around 700 titles, and partnerships with theaters, festivals, and cultural venues across the country. It also promotes research initiatives aimed at specialized audiences and maintains an editorial line dedicated to the publication of books, catalogs, and special editions related to its collection and the study of Chilean cinema. These efforts are complemented by initiatives such as the Escuela al Cine (Film School Program), which includes nearly 500 film clubs distributed throughout the country.
