Flimmern & Flirren – Die Filmwelt der Marie Losier
Die französische Künstlerin Marie Losier ist vor allem für ihre poetischen und ungeschliffenen 16-mm-Filmporträts avantgardistischer Musikerinnen und Filmemacherinnen bekannt, die faszinierende Grenzgänge des Dokumentarischen erkunden. Ihre Werke offenbaren dabei ebenso viel über die porträtierten Personen wie über Losier selbst – getragen von einem unerschöpflichen Drang, gemeinsam mit anderen etwas Flirrendes, Klirrendes, Neues zu erschaffen.
French artist Marie Losier is primarily known for her poetic, winningly unpolished 16mm film portraits of avant-garde musicians and filmmakers that explore the border regions of the documentary in fascinating fashion. Her works reveal as much about the subjects of her portraits as they do about Losier herself and are carried by a tireless urge to work with other people to create something flickering, shimmering and new.

Das Metropolis Kino liegt im Herzen der Hamburger City. Neben täglichen Filmvorführungen bietet es Stummfilmkonzerte, Lesungen, Musikperformances, Filmgespräche, Einführungen, Vortragsreihen und thematische Panels. Als kommunales Kino zeigt das Metropolis Spiel-, Dokumentar-, Trick- und Experimentalfilme – von filmhistorischen Raritäten und Klassikern über umfangreiche Retrospektiven bis hin zu aktuellen europäischen und internationalen Produktionen. Mit seiner technischen Ausstattung – 35mm-, 16mm- und Super8-Projektoren sowie verschiedenen digitalen Formaten wie DigiBeta und Mini-DV – kann das Metropolis historische Filme im originalen Vorführformat präsentieren.
2019 feierte das Haus sein 40-jähriges Bestehen. Entstanden aus einer Initiative von Hamburger Filmemacher:innen ab 1977, eröffnete das Kino 1979 unter Heiner Roß. In den 1980er Jahren entstand das hauseigene Archiv, das heute über 5.800 analoge Filmkopien umfasst. Renommierte Festivals wie das Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg, Filmfest Hamburg oder das Hamburg International Queer Film Festival nahmen hier in den 1980ern ihren Anfang. Seit 2006 leitet Martin Aust die Kinemathek Hamburg e.V., die Trägerin des Kinos ist.
Die monatlichen Programme bestehen aus Retrospektiven, thematischen Einzelveranstaltungen und länderbezogenen Reihen, kuratiert in Zusammenarbeit mit Filmfestivals, Konsulaten und Kulturinstituten. Zu den Kooperationspartner:innen gehören u.a. die Deichtorhallen, die Sammlung Falckenberg, Museen Stade, Universität Hamburg, HFBK, Hafencity Universität, die Landeszentrale für politische Bildung, die Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung und der VVN.
Jedes Jahr beteiligt sich das Metropolis an der SchulKinoWoche Hamburg. Trotz innerstädtischer Lage ohne viele Schulen wird das Kinderfilmprogramm mit besonderer Leidenschaft gepflegt. Seit April 2023 ergänzt das Format „Stummfilmkonzerte für Lütte“ das Angebot: Klassiker von Buster Keaton oder Laurel & Hardy werden live für Kinder ab sechs Jahren vertont.
Ziel der Kinemathek Hamburg ist es, filmhistorisches Wissen zu vermitteln, Medienkompetenz zu fördern und einen Raum für filmische wie gesellschaftspolitische Debatten zu schaffen – als ästhetische und historische Ergänzung des Hamburger Kinoprogramms.
The Metropolis Cinema is located in the heart of Hamburg’s city center. In addition to daily film screenings, it presents silent film concerts, readings, music performances, film talks, historical introductions, lecture series, and thematic panels. As a municipal cinema, Metropolis shows fiction, documentary, animated, and experimental films – from cinematic rarities and classics to extensive retrospectives and current European and international productions.
With its technical equipment – 35mm, 16mm, and Super 8 projectors as well as various digital formats including DigiBeta and Mini-DV – Metropolis is able to screen historical films in their original exhibition formats.
In 2019, the cinema celebrated its 40th anniversary. Emerging from a 1977 initiative by Hamburg filmmakers, it opened in 1979 under the direction of Heiner Roß. During the 1980s, the in-house archive was established; today it holds more than 5,800 analog film prints across all genres and eras. Renowned festivals such as the Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg, Filmfest Hamburg, and the Hamburg International Queer Film Festival trace their origins to long cinephile weekends at Metropolis in the 1980s. Since 2006, Martin Aust has headed the Kinemathek Hamburg e.V., which operates the cinema.
Its monthly programmes include retrospectives, thematic events with guests, and country-focused series curated in collaboration with film festivals, consulates, and cultural institutes. Partners include Deichtorhallen Hamburg, the Falckenberg Collection, the Museen Stade, the University of Hamburg, the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, HafenCity University, as well as the State Agency for Civic Education, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, and the VVN.
Each November, Metropolis participates in the Hamburg School Cinema Week. Despite the inner-city location with few schools nearby, the cinema maintains its children’s film programming with particular dedication. Since April 2023, the new format “Stummfilmkonzerte für Lütte” (“Silent Film Concerts for Little Ones”) has expanded the offer: classics by Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy are performed live for children aged six and up.
The goal of Kinemathek Hamburg is to foster broad understanding of film and audiovisual media, to convey film history, support practical media work, and provide a space for cinematic and sociopolitical discussion. With its diverse programme, Metropolis offers an aesthetic, historical, and thematic enrichment of Hamburg’s film culture.
