Forum Expanded: 19 going on 20 (Redux)
Diesen Februar feierte das Forum Expanded sein 20. Jubiläum. Die 2006 gegründete Festivalsektion hat in den vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnten Jahr für Jahr die Berlinale formal und inhaltlich durch experimentelles Kino, Expanded Cinema, Performances, Installationen, Konzerte, Lesungen und Diskussionen erweitert. Zum runden Geburtstag wurden Filme und Installationen aus den ersten 19 Jahren des Programms wiederaufgeführt. Eine Auswahl der gezeigten Kurzfilme wird nun im e-flux Screening Room präsentiert, einem Kino für Experimentalfilm und „artists’ moving image“ in Brooklyn, New York. Das Programm 19 going on 20 (Redux) versammelt fünf kurze Filme aus den Jahren 2016 bis 2024. Die Arbeiten von Vika Kirchenbauer, Zuza Banasińska, Shelly Silver, Eduardo Williams/Mariano Blatt und Tomonari Nishikawa bieten einen Einblick in die breite ästhetische und thematische Spanne von Forum Expanded: Von strukturalistischen Landschaftsbeobachtungen über feministische Interventionen, Poesie und Performance bis zu autofiktionalen Bearbeitungen von persönlichem und gefundenem Archivmaterial. This February, Forum Expanded celebrated its 20th anniversary. Founded in 2006, the festival section has expanded the Berlinale formally and thematically year after year over the past two decades with experimental cinema, expanded cinema, performances, installations, concerts, readings and discussions. To mark this milestone birthday, films and installations from the first 19 years of the programme were screened again. A selection of the short films shown is now being presented at the e-flux Screening Room, a cinema for experimental film and artists' moving image in Brooklyn, New York. The programme 19 going on 20 (Redux) brings together five short films from the years 2016 to 2024. The works by Vika Kirchenbauer, Zuza Banasińska, Shelly Silver, Eduardo Williams/Mariano Blatt, and Tomonari Nishikawa offer an insight into the broad aesthetic and thematic range of Forum Expanded: from structuralist landscape observations to feminist interventions, poetry, and performance to autofictional adaptations of personal and found archive material. Der e-flux Screening Room ist ein Kino mit 70 Plätzen in Brooklyn, das ausgewählte Filme von Künstlerinnen, Videokunst und Experimentalfilme zeigt. Der Raum ist so konzipiert, dass er Begegnungen zwischen kuratierten Vorführungen wichtiger zeitgenössischer Bewegtbildwerke aus aller Welt und Gespräche mit Künstlerinnen, Kuratorinnen und Theoretikerinnen im Rahmen von Diskussionsveranstaltungen, Seminaren und Vorträgen ermöglicht.
Technologische und wirtschaftliche Paradigmenwechsel in den letzten Jahrzehnten haben dazu geführt, dass die Bewegtbildkunst noch multidisziplinärer, geografisch zergliedert und vergänglicher geworden ist als je zuvor und gleichzeitig neue Wege der Produktion, Ausstellung und Verbreitung von Filmen und Videos hervorgebracht haben, die marktbasierte Filmfestivals nicht nachvollziehen. Der e-flux Screening Room widmet sich der Erforschung des Raums zwischen Experimentalfilm, Kino und zeitgenössischer Kunst, in dem solche neuen Ansätze der Bewegtbildkunst entstehen können.
Der Screening Room ist ein Bildungsraum, in dem man die Geschichte der Bewegtbildkunst kennenlernen und erforschen kann. Es ist ein Ort, an dem Avantgardefilme der 1920er Jahre, Underground- und Experimentalfilmbewegungen der 1960er Jahre, erweiterte Kinopraktiken, Video- und Installationskunst des späten 20. Jahrhunderts und Künstlerfilme des 21. Jahrhunderts in einen übergreifenden Kontext gestellt werden können, der sich auf Künstler*innen und Bewegungen aus Teilen der Welt konzentriert, die von den vorherrschenden Kanons der Film- und Kunstindustrie ausgeschlossen werden oder ihnen unbekannt sind. e-flux Screening Room is a seventy-seat cinema in Brooklyn presenting artists’ cinema, video art, and experimental film. The space is designed to welcome encounters between curated screenings of today’s key moving-image works from all parts of the world and conversations with artists, curators, and theorists through discursive events, seminars, and lectures.
Technological and economic paradigm shifts in recent decades have caused moving-image art to become even more multi-disciplinary, geographically dispersed, and ephemeral than ever before, while prompting new ways of producing, exhibiting, and disseminating films and videos that market-based film festivals fail to understand. e-flux Screening Room is dedicated to exploring the space between experimental film, cinema, and contemporary art where such emergent approaches to moving-image art can flourish.
The Screening Room is an educational space to study and learn about the histories of moving-image art. It is a venue where avant-garde films of the 1920s, underground and experimental film movements of the 1960s, expanded cinema practices, late twentieth-century video and installation art, and twenty-first century artists’ films can be contextualized within an overarching focus on artists and movements from parts of the world excluded from or unfamiliar to dominant canons of the film and art industries.
