Vittorio De Sica (1901–1974) zählt zu den bedeutendsten und produktivsten Persönlichkeiten der italienischen Filmgeschichte. Seine Filmografie umfasst mehr als 30 Regiearbeiten sowie über 150 Filme, in denen er als Darsteller mitgewirkt hat. Neben Roberto Rossellini und Luchino Visconti war De Sica einer der zentralen Vertreter des Neorealismus. Mit Laien an Originalschauplätzen gedreht, zeigte der Neorealismus in einer Mischung aus Melodramatik und genauer Milieubeobachtung die Realität Nachkriegsitaliens und nahm Anteil am Schicksal der Ärmsten der Gesellschaft. Seine Filme SCIUSCIÀ sowie die nachfolgenden LADRI DI BICICLETTE (1948) und MIRACOLO A MILANO (1951) wurden von der Kritik gefeiert und mit internationalen Preisen ausgezeichnet. De Sica, dessen Thematisierung gesellschaftlicher Missstände nach Meinung konservativer politischer Kreise gegen die Interessen der Nation verstieß, bekam zunehmend Schwierigkeiten, seine Filme in Italien zu produzieren. In den 50er Jahren wirkte er in über 50 Filmen mit, um mit dem als Schauspieler verdienten Geld seine Regiearbeiten finanzieren zu können. Viele dieser Filme bleiben nicht zuletzt wegen De Sicas Schauspielkunst in Erinnerung. In seiner unnachahmlichen Art spielte er oft den Bonvivant, agil und eitel, das Umwerben von Frauen zur Kunst verfeinernd, alles mit subtiler Ironie relativierend. Eindrucksvolle Verkörperungen ernster Rollen wie in Rossellinis IL GENERALE DELLA ROVERE (1959) sind Zeugnis seiner Vielseitigkeit. (Hans-Joachim Fetzer)
Im Bundesplatz-Kino und im KLICK Kino in Berlin präsentiert das Arsenal acht Regiearbeiten sowie fünf Filme aus De Sicas Schauspielkarriere, viele davon als 35-mm-Kopie. Die Hommage Vittorio De Sica ist eine Kooperation mit dem Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Berlino.
Vittorio De Sica (1901–1974) is counted among the most significant and most productive personalities in Italian film history. His filmography comprises more than 30 works as a director as well as the over 150 films in which he acted. Alongside Roberto Rossellini and Luchino Visconti, he was one of the central representatives of neorealism. Shot with non-professional actors at original locations, neorealism combined melodrama and precise observation of specific milieus to present the reality of post-war Italy and showed a keen interest in the fates of the poorest in society. SCIUSCIÀ and its follow-ups LADRI DI BICICLETTE (1948) and MIRACOLO A MILANO (1951) were acclaimed by critics and received international prizes. According to conservative political circles, De Sica’s desire to address social inequalities went against the interests of the nation, which made it increasingly difficult for him to produce his films in Italy. In the 50s, he acted in over 50 films and used his earnings to finance his directorial works. Many of these films are remembered not least for De Sica’s acting skills. In his own inimitable way, he often played the bon-vivant, agile and vain, turning the act of wooing women into a veritable art form and relativizing his actions with subtle irony. Impressive performances in serious roles like Rossellini’s IL GENERALE DELLA ROVERE (1959) also bear witness to his versatility. (Hans-Joachim Fetzer)
At the Bundesplatz-Kino and the KLICK-Kino in Berlin, Arsenal is presenting eight directorial works and five films from De Sica's acting career, many of them as 35mm prints. The Hommage Vittorio De Sica is a co-operation with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Berlino.

Bundesplatz-Kino
Das Bundesplatz-Kino ist ein Ort, der nicht nur Filme zeigt, sondern auch kulturelle Begegnungen fördert und Diskussionen anregt. Aktuelle Filmstarts werden sorgfältig ausgewählt und sind zu einem hohen Prozentsatz europäische Produktionen. Gehobene Unterhaltung, die neuesten Werke bedeutender zeitgenössischer Regisseur*innen und regelmäßige Vorführungen von Dokumentarfilmen prägen das Programm.
Dieser Kinostandort hat eine lange Geschichte, die bis ins Jahr 1919 zurückreicht. Vom Krieg verschont geblieben, wurde das Ladenkino – bis auf wenige Monate – fast durchgängig bespielt. Aus den „Lichtspielen am Kaiserplatz“ entwickelte sich über die Jahrzehnte das „Bundesplatz Studio“. 2011 erlebte es unter der Leitung von Martin Erlenmaier und Peter Latta eine Wiederbelebung als Bundesplatz-Kino, die dem einstigen Nachspiel-Kino ein eigenes Profil gaben. Der neu hinzugekommene Café-Bereich hat das Kino zu einem kommunikativen Kulturort gemacht, der den Bundesplatz prägt.
Weit über den Kiez hinaus werden die filmhistorischen Reihen geschätzt. Gleich mehrere Werkschauen galten einzelnen Regisseurinnen und den frauenbewegten Filmen des Neuen Deutschen Films. Für Klassiker stehen im Vorführraum auch zwei der inzwischen rar gewordenen 35-mm-Projektoren zur Verfügung. Die beiden Programmmacher kooperieren regelmäßig mit Institutionen wie der C.G. Jung-Gesellschaft, der Initiative Bundesplatz e.V. und dem Deutschen Kulturforum östliches Europa. Jährlich zu Gast sind das polnische Filmfestival FilmPolska und das Jüdische Filmfestival Berlin Brandenburg. Besonderes Interesse gilt dem italienischen Film. Neu hinzugekommen ist die „DOK Premiere“, bei der das Haus des Dokumentarfilms Stuttgart monatlich einen neuen Dokumentarfilm vorab präsentiert. Das Publikum des Bundesplatz-Kinos weiß die hohe Anzahl der Gäste zu schätzen. Die Publikumsgespräche mit Künstler*innen und Fachleuten sind lebhaft, die oft ganz persönlich im Café – drinnen und draußen – fortgesetzt werden. (Martin Erlenmaier)
The Bundesplatz-Kino is a place that not only screens films but also fosters cultural encounters and stimulates discussions. Current film releases are carefully selected, with a high percentage being European productions. The program features sophisticated entertainment, the latest works by significant contemporary directors, and regular screenings of documentaries.
This cinema has a long history that dates back to 1919. Having been spared from the war, the small cinema has been in continuous operation—except for a few months. Over the decades, the "Lichtspiele am Kaiserplatz" evolved into the "Bundesplatz Studio." In 2011, under the management of Martin Erlenmaier and Peter Latta, it was revitalized as the Bundesplatz-Kino, giving the former second-run cinema its own distinct identity. The newly added café area has transformed the cinema into a vibrant cultural spot that shapes the Bundesplatz.
The film historical series are appreciated far beyond the local neighborhood. Several retrospectives have focused on individual female directors and the feminist films of the New German Cinema. For classics, two of the now rare 35mm projectors are also available in the screening room. The two programmers regularly collaborate with institutions such as the C.G. Jung Society, the Initiative Bundesplatz e.V., and the Deutsche Kulturforum östliches Europa. Annually, the Polish Film Festival FilmPolska and the Jewish Film Festival Berlin Brandenburg are guests. There is a particular interest in Italian cinema. Newly added is the "DOK Premiere," where the Haus des Dokumentarfilm Stuttgart presents a new documentary film in advance each month. The audience of the Bundesplatz-Kino appreciates the high number of guests. KLICK Kino
2021 – mitten in der Corona-Pandemie – wurde es wiedereröffnet: das KLICK. Zu den neuen Programmmacher*innen und Kinobetreiber*innen gehören Christos Acrivulis und Anders De Martino. Gemeinsam gaben sie dem einstigen typischen Berliner Ladenkino, 1911 gegründet und bis 2004 unter wechselnden Namen betrieben, eine neue Zukunft und dem Charlottenburger Kiez einen Kulturort, der zum Austausch einlädt und ein Stück Lebensqualität in die Nachbarschaft gebracht hat.
Das KLICK ist ein ambitioniertes Programmkino. Anspruchsvolle Filme, die nach ihrem Kinostart nur für kurze Zeit – oder gar nicht – in den Berliner Kinos zu sehen waren, finden hier einen Ort. Weitere Schwerpunkte des Programms sind restaurierte und digitalisierte Filmklassiker, Hommagen, Dokumentarfilmprogramme und Festivals. Regelmäßige Kooperationen mit der Architektenkammer Berlin, der Queer Media Society oder den KLICK Pat*innen – Künstler*innen oder Filmschaffende, die jeden Monat die Patenschaft für das Programm des KLICK übernehmen und eigene und von ihnen kuratierte Filme vorstellen – ergänzen das Programm. Zu den ebenfalls monatlich stattfindenden Angeboten gehört der BuchMittwoch, der Lesung und Film kombiniert und der KLICK Sneak mit einer Überraschungs-Preview. Gespräche mit Kurator*innen, Regisseur*innen und Darsteller*innen und dem Publikum, die häufig im neu eröffneten Kino-eigenen Café fortgesetzt werden, begleiten die Programme. (Christos Acrivulis)
The KLICK reopened in 2021—in the middle of the pandemic. Christos Acrivulis and Anders De Martino took over as the new program makers (among others) and cinema managers. Together, they gave a new future to a typical Berlin neighborhood cinema, which was established in 1911 and operated under different names until 2004. With the KLICK, the Charlottenburg Kiez has gained a cultural venue for exchange and community increasing the quality of life in a central Berlin quarter.
KLICK is an ambitious art house cinema. It offers a dedicated space for artistically ambitious films that are normally only shown in Berlin for a short time after their theatrical release—or not at all. Other program highlights include restored and digitized film classics, homages to filmmakers and actors, documentary film programs and festivals. Regular collaborations with the Berlin Chamber of Architects, the Queer Media Society, and the KLICK Pat*innen—artists or filmmakers who take over the patronage of the KLICK program every month and present films of their own and of directors they admire—complement the program. The monthly events also include BuchMittwoch, which combines literature readings and films, and KLICK Sneak with a surprise preview. Talks with curators, directors, actors and the audience, which often continue in the newly opened adjacent café that is part of the cinema, accompany the programs. (Christos Acrivulis)
