I Have A Dream — In Search Of Lost Visions
Als Antwort auf die Zunahme populistischer und rechter Ideologien und Parteien richtet die Filmreihe den Fokus auf Ideale demokratischer und diverser Kulturen. Sie präsentiert monatlich einen Film, der Kämpfe von Emanzipationsbewegungen thematisiert und sich gegen Unterdrückung und Kolonialismus richtet: Die Befreiungskämpfe afrikanischer Länder, die Act Up-Bewegung oder Kampf für Menschenrechte sind zum Beispiel Themen, denen sich Filme der Reihe widmen. Dabei sind auch die Widersprüche, Ängste, Verluste oder das Scheitern Gegenstand der Betrachtung. Die Filmreihe soll ermutigen und zum gemeinsamen Austausch einladen.
Die Reihe wird im Juni mit dem Film BECOMING BLACK (D 2019) von Ines Johnson-Spain fortgesetzt. In Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Identität geht Ines Johnson-Spain dem alles überschattenden Tabu ihrer Kindheit auf die Spur und legt dabei exemplarisch den strukturellen Rassismus der DDR offen.
In response to the rise of populist and right-wing ideologies and parties, this film series focuses on the ideals of democratic and diverse cultures. Each month, it presents a film that highlights the struggles of emancipation movements and is directed against oppression and colonialism. The struggles for liberation of African countries, the Act Up movement or the fight for human rights are some of the topics addressed by the films in the series. Contradictions, fears, losses or failure are also part of the reflection. The film series is intended to offer encouragement and invite a collective exchange.
In June, this series will continue with the film BECOMING BLACK (G 2019) by Ines Johnson-Spain. She explores the taboo that overshadowed everything in her childhood and depicts the structural racism of the GDR.

1981 öffnete das Kino seine Pforten in einem ehemaligen Möbelhaus und widmete sein Programm vor allem dem künstlerischen deutschen und europäischen Film. Thematische Filmreihen gehörten von Anfang an dazu. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Verein Die Linse seit 1997 wurde das Programm um internationales, experimentelles und queeres Kino erweitert. Durch die Kooperation wurde kommerzielles Kinos und subventionierte Kultur unter einem Dach kombiniert.
Die Räumlichkeiten bieten eine Gastronomie und einen offenen Kulturraum für Ausstellungen, Gespräche und Lesungen, um Kino auch als sozialen Ort zu etablieren, der Menschen zusammenbringt und Diskurse ermöglicht. Immer wieder versucht der Verein den Ort Kino durch soziokulturelle Ansätze zu öffnen – dass Kultur politisch ist und damit auch das Programm, ist selbstredend.
Seit 2016 bringt der Verein mit den Programmen der Gruppe Leinwandbegegnung Menschen mit und ohne Migrationsgeschichte zusammen. In den 2010er Jahren schaffte Die Linse mit dem Programm „Münster – Globale Stadt“ zum ersten Mal einen offenen Raum für diese Begegnungen und Teilhabe. Queere Programme gehören seit Anfang an zur Linse-Programmarbeit. Seit 1989 zeigt der Verein monatlich Filme in diesem Kontext und veranstaltet mit den Queerstreifen auch ein Filmfestival. Jüdische Kultur ist der Fokus einer Reihe, die seit 12 Jahren monatlich Filme präsentiert. Aber auch thematische Programme wie „Protest – Provokation – Provinz – 1968 im Film“, „Chile – 40 Jahre Putsch gegen Allende" oder „Zur aktuellen Situation in Griechenland“ prägen das Repertoire des Kinos. In 1981, the program cinema opened its doors in a former furniture store. Since the late 1960s, it had shared space with an old cinema and a disco but had to vacate that location. The program primarily focused on artistic German and European films, with thematic film series being a standard feature. Since 1997, collaboration with the association Die Linse has brought films from around the world to the cinema, with an even stronger emphasis on thematic film series, queer programming, and other artistic forms. The cooperation between the commercial cinema and the association combined commercial necessities with subsidized culture under one roof.
The facilities include a gastronomy area and an open cultural space for exhibitions, discussions, and readings, aiming to create a cinema that serves not only as a cultural but also as a social space, enabling open, respectful discourse, bringing together diverse people, and offering insights into cultures worldwide. The association continually seeks to open the cinema space through sociocultural approaches. It is self-evident that culture is political, and so is the program.
Since 2016, the association has brought together people with and without migration backgrounds through the group Leinwandbegegnung, allowing them to curate programs that aim to connect people. For the first time in the 2010s, Die Linse created an open space for these encounters and participation with the program “Münster—Global City”. Queer programming marked the beginning of Die Linse's programming efforts. Since 1989, the association has shown monthly films in this context and also hosts a film festival featuring queer films. Jewish culture is the focus of a series that has presented monthly films for 12 years. Additionally, occasion-based programs such as "Protest—Provocation—Province—1968 in Film”, "Chile—40 Years Since the Coup Against Allende", and "On the Current Situation in Greece" shape the program.
