Indische Filme aus dem Arsenal-Archiv: Bangalore Edition
Das indische Kino hat seit den Anfängen des Arsenal einen festen Platz im Programm. Das Archiv spiegelt diese Geschichte wider. Viele der im Kino gezeigten Filme fanden über die Jahrzehnte Eingang in die Sammlung, darunter auch Filmkopien, die heutzutage als rar oder als Unikate gelten. Einige indische Titel konnten in den letzten Jahren vom Arsenal digital restauriert und wieder zugänglich gemacht werden. Die Rückführung von Filmen in das Produktionsland spielte dabei eine wesentliche Rolle. Arsenal on Location bietet nun die Möglichkeit, eine Auswahl der Restaurierungen gemeinsam mit den Goethe-Instituten in Indien und Sri Lanka, die oft unterstützend mitgewirkt haben, dem Publikum vor Ort vorzustellen. Die Veranstaltungen finden an sieben Standorten im November und Dezember statt.
Bangalore: SAMSKARA (T. Pattabhi Rama Reddy, 1971) ist ein eindrucksvoller Film über das Kastensystem in Indien, gedreht von einer Gruppe von Künstler*innen im südindischen Bundesstaat Karnataka. Der Film wird wie BADNAM BASTI dem Parallel Cinema zugeschrieben. Kopien beider Titel fanden Anfang der 70er Jahre als Teil eines größeren Verleihpakets Eingang ins Arsenal-Archiv. In Indien ist der Film seit Langem nur als DVD in schlechter Qualität zugänglich. Anlässlich der anstehenden Restaurierung, die von der Film Heritage Foundation durchgeführt wird, soll das Screening in Bangalore einen Rahmen bieten, um gemeinsam mit dem Publikum die Aktualität des Films wie auch Fragen zur Kopienlage und Restaurierung zu diskutieren.
Indian cinema has always been a fixture in Arsenal's program. The archive reflects this history. Many of the films shown in the cinema have found their way into the collection over the decades, including film copies that are now considered rare or unique. In recent years, Arsenal has digitally restored some Indian titles and made them accessible again. Returning films to their country of production played an important role in this process. Arsenal on Location now offers the opportunity to present a selection of restorations to local audiences in collaboration with the Goethe Instituts in India and Sri Lanka, which have often provided support. The events will take place at seven locations in November and December.
Bangalore: SAMSKARA (T. Pattabhi Rama Reddy, 1971) is an impressive film about the caste system in India that was shot by a group of artists in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Like BADNAM BASTI, it is attributed to Parallel Cinema. Copies of both titles found their way into Arsenal's archive in the early 1970s as part of a larger distribution package. In India, the film has long been available as a poor-quality DVD. On the occasion of its upcoming restoration by the Film Heritage Foundation, the screening in Bangalore will provide a forum for discussing the film's relevance today as well as questions about the state of the copies and the restoration process with the audience.

Film – sowohl Mainstream als auch experimentell – ist tief im kulturellen Gefüge Bangalores verankert. Das Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan spielt seit den 1960er-Jahren eine zentrale Rolle dabei, eine Plattform für Filmemacherinnen, Cineastinnen und die breite Öffentlichkeit zu schaffen, um die Meister des deutschen Kinos zu erleben und von ihnen zu lernen. Zugleich hat es zahlreiche wegweisende Programme initiiert, die einen bedeutungsvollen Dialog zwischen den beiden Filmkulturen anregen.
Von Filmvorführungen und Workshops bis hin zu Residenzen und Festivals war dieser Austausch stets intensiv und bemerkenswert. Das Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan war Gastgeber mehrerer unvergesslicher Ausgaben des ikonischen Experimenta India – Festival of the Moving Image, bei denen die Zusammenarbeit mit Arsenal ihren festen Platz fand.
Mit Arsenal on Location in Bangalore rückt erneut die Bedeutung von Archivierung, Restaurierung und Digitalisierung unschätzbarer Filme in den Mittelpunkt. Die Vorführung von SAMSKARA (T. Pattabhi Rama Reddy, 1971), gefolgt von einem Gespräch mit Künstler*innen, die dem Filmemacher eng verbunden sind, eröffnet einen Raum der Reflexion – nicht nur über die zentralen Themen des Films, sondern auch über zeitgenössische Archivpraktiken und die Frage: Was kann Kino?
Film, both mainstream and experimental, is strongly etched in the cultural fabric of Bangalore. The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan has played a pivotal role since the 1960s in creating a platform for filmmakers, cineastes and the general public to experience and learn from the masters of German cinema, while also initiating multiple, pioneering programmes to stimulate meaningful dialogue between the two film cultures.
From screenings and workshops to residencies and film festivals, the exchange has been deep and remarkable. The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan has played host to several memorable editions of the iconic Experimenta India – Festival of the Moving Image, during which the collaboration with Arsenal was firmly established.
With Arsenal on Location in Bangalore, the spotlight swings once again on the importance of archiving, restoration and digitisation of priceless films. The screening of SAMSKARA (T. Pattabhi Rama Reddy, 1971), followed by a discussion with artists closely connected with the filmmaker, opens up a space for reflection, not only on the critical themes the film addresses, but also on contemporary archiving practice and the question: What can cinema do?
