Kinocenter Kehl: The Caligari Film Award at the Bridgehead of the European Metropole
In diesem Jahr haben die Kommunalen Kinos (organisiert im Bundesverband kommunale Filmarbeit e.V.) zum 40. Mal den Caligari-Filmpreis im Berlinale Forum vergeben. Der langjährige Geschäftsführer des Bundesverbandes, Fabian Schauren, war zwölf Jahre lang für die Ausrichtung des Preises mitverantwortlich. Im vergangenen Sommer hat er das Kinocenter Kehl übernommen. Kehl ist aus Berliner Sicht klein, ca. 38.000 Einwohner, aber den meisten Frankreichreisenden sagt das badische Grenzstädtchen vis-à-vis von Straßburg etwas. Kehl – das ist die Grenze. Wenn in der Tagesschau über stationäre Grenzkontrollen berichtet wird, wird das aktuell meistens mit dem Bild von Bundespolizisten an einer der vier Kehler Rheinbrücken illustriert. Der erste Gedanke war, ausgehend von der benachbarten Eurometropole Straßburg, europäische Gewinnerfilme des Preises im Europamonat Mai zu präsentieren, aber nur eine weltumspannende Auswahl kann die Vielfalt des Preises und des Berlinale Forums abbilden.
This year, the municipal cinemas (organized by the Bundesverband kommunale Filmarbeit e.V.) awarded the Caligari Film Award at the Berlinale Forum for the 40th time. Fabian Schauren, the long-term managing director of the Bundesverband, was one of those responsible for organizing the prize for 12 years. Last summer, he took over the Kinocenter Kehl. From a Berlin perspective, Kehl is small, around 38,000 inhabitants, but most people who travel to France will have heard of this border town in Baden just across the way from Strasbourg. When there are reports about border controls on the evening news, they are currently illustrated with a picture of a police officer at one of the four bridges that cross the Rhein in Kehl. Given the proximity of the neighboring European metropole of Strasbourg, the first idea was to show the European winners of the award in May (Europe month), but only an international selection can truly show the diversity of the prize and that of the Berlinale Forum.

Kehl hat circa 38.000 Einwohner, aber mit der Tram ist man ganz schnell über den Rhein in der Innenstadt der Euro-Métropole Strasbourg, die nur fünf Kilometer entfernt ist. Seit 1957 steht im Hinterhof des Hauses an der Hauptstraße 57 ein Kinogebäude – nur wenige Schritte vom Marktplatz. 1982 wurden in die beiden hinteren Ecken des Einzelhauses (ursprünglich 550 Plätze) zwei weitere Säle eingebaut und aus den Kammerlichtspielen das Kinocenter Kehl. Kino 1 entspricht weiterhin der ursprünglichen Projektionssituation und hat heute 174 Plätze. Die beiden kleinen Kinos haben jeweils eine sechs Meter breite Leinwand und mit 59 und 72 Sitzen angenehme Größen. Das Programm des Kinocenters ist eine Mischung aus Mainstream mit Bundesstarts und Arthouse und umfasst pro Woche meist um die 70 Vorstellungen und 20 verschiedene Filme. Insbesondere das Kinderfilmprogramm und das aktuelle türkischsprachige Kino locken auch elsässisches Publikum über den Rhein – auch Schulen nutzen die Vorführungen. Das nächste deutschsprachige Kino befindet sich im 20 Kilometer entfernten Offenburg.
Kehl has around 38,000 inhabitants, but thanks to the tram, it’s just a quick ride across the Rhine into the city center of the Euro-metropolis Strasbourg, only five kilometers away. Since 1957, a cinema building has stood in the backyard of the house at Hauptstraße 57 – just a few steps from the market square. In 1982, two additional auditoriums were added to the back corners of the original single-screen theater (which then seated 550), transforming the Kammerlichtspiele into the Kinocenter Kehl. Cinema 1 still preserves the original projection setup and now has 174 seats. The two smaller auditoriums each have a six-meter-wide screen and a pleasant size, with 59 and 72 seats respectively. The Kinocenter’s programming is a mix of mainstream releases with national premieres and arthouse films, featuring around 70 screenings and 20 different films per week. The children’s film lineup and current Turkish-language cinema, in particular, also attract audiences from Alsace – including school groups who attend special screenings. The nearest German-language cinema is located in Offenburg, 20 kilometers away.
