Kino Ponrepo, Prag: Woman Rose Song Bone
Das Národní filmový archiv (NFA) in Prag wurde 1943 gegründet und ist eine der wichtigsten Institutionen zur Bewahrung des kulturellen Erbes in der Tschechischen Republik. Die stets offene und solidarische Haltung des NFA jenseits geografischer Grenzen und tradierter Verbindungen zeigt sich im Engagement seiner Mitarbeiter*innen in internationalen Netzwerken wie der FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) oder ACE (Association of European Cinematheques), aber auch in der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Arsenal, die Jahrzehnte zurück reicht und bis heute weiterwirkt. So berät Matěj Strnad, Leiter der kuratorischen Abteilung, das zweijährig stattfindende Festival Archival Assembly und die Kuratorin Klára Trsková war im Rahmen eines Programms der FIAF drei Monate lang Gast im Team des Arsenal.
Im Rahmen der Reihe Woman Rose Song Bone widmet sich das Kino des NFA feministischen und queeren Perspektiven. Ziel ist es, die Aufmerksamkeit auf Regisseurinnen und andere Filmarbeiterinnen zu lenken sowie die Darstellung von Frauen und die Funktion weiblicher Figuren in Erzählungen kritisch zu reflektieren.
DEVDAS (Bimal Roy, Indien 1955), eine Verfilmung der gleichnamigen Novelle von Sharat Chandra Chattopadhya, zeigt die tiefe Verankerung heteronormativer Liebe in der Mythologie des indischen Films. Roy legt dabei jedoch den Fokus auf eine sehr differenzierte Darstellung der weiblichen Hauptfiguren.
BADNAM BASTI (Prem Kapoor, Indien 1971), ein Melodram aus der sogenannten indischen Neuen Welle, handelt von einer Dreiecksbeziehung zwischen zwei Männern und einer Frau und gilt als erster indischer Queer-Film. 2019 wurde er im Archiv des Arsenal wiederentdeckt und restauriert.
Der Experimentalfilm RIDDLES OF THE SPHINX (UK 1977) von Peter Wollen und Laura Mulvey, Autorin des wegweisenden feministischen Essays „Visuelle Lust und narratives Kino“ (1975) stellt den Versuch dar, Methoden der Filmtheorie, Psychoanalyse und des Feminismus filmisch umzusetzen.
In WINTER ADÉ (Helke Misselwitz, DDR 1988) sprechen Frauen unterschiedlichen Alters, sozialer Herkunft und beruflicher Betätigung von ihren Hoffnungen, Sehnsüchten und Enttäuschungen. Eingebettet in eine Zugfahrt durch die DDR entsteht ein Eindruck des Lebens und der Stimmung ein Jahr vor dem Mauerfall.
Founded in 1943, the Národní filmový archiv (NFA) in Prague is one of the most important institutions for preserving cultural heritage in the Czech Republic. The NFA's consistently open and supportive attitude, which goes beyond geographical boundaries and traditional connections, is reflected in the commitment of its employees to international networks such as the FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) and ACE (Association of European Cinematheques), as well as in its decades-long collaboration with Arsenal, which continues to this day. Matěj Strnad, the head of the curatorial department, is an advisor for the biennial Archival Assembly festival, and curator Klára Trsková spent three months as a guest of the Arsenal team as part of an FIAF program. As part of the Woman Rose Song Bone program, the NFA is focusing on feminist and queer perspectives. The aim is to draw attention to female directors and other women working in film, as well as to critically reflect on the portrayal of women and the role of female characters in narratives.
DEVDAS (Bimal Roy, India 1955), a film adaptation of the eponymous novella by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhya, shows how deeply heteronormative love is rooted in the mythology of Indian cinema. But Roy delivers a very nuanced portrayal of the main female protagonists.
BADNAM BASTI (Prem Kapoor, India 1971), a melodrama of the Indian New Wave about a love triangle between two men and a woman, is considered to be the first Indian queer film. It was rediscovered in the Arsenal archive in 2019 and restored.
The experimental film RIDDLES OF THE SPHINX (UK 1977) by Peter Wollen and Laura Mulvey, the author of the 1975 groundbreaking feminist essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema”, represents an attempt to translate methods of film theory, psychoanalysis, and feminism on film.
In WINTER ADÉ (Helke Misselwitz, GDR 1988), women of different ages, social backgrounds, and professions talk about their hopes, desires, and disappointments. Set against the backdrop of a train journey through the GDR, the film conveys an impression of the mood and life in the country one year before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Ponrepo, der Vorführsaal des Národní filmový archiv, befindet sich im Bio Konvikt, dem historisch wertvollen Jesuitenrefektorium Konvikt, das in den neunziger Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts rekonstruiert wurde. Der Konvikt-Saal wurde Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zu einem der wichtigsten Kulturzentren in Prag. Diese Tradition setzte sich auch im 19. Jahrhundert fort. Ponrepo ist derzeit eines der letzten Kinos in der Tschechischen Republik, das noch Filme von Originalkopien zeigt, insbesondere aus den Sammlungen des NFA. Das Programm umfasst außerdem bedeutende zeitgenössische Werke, experimentelles Kino, Kultklassiker und Stummfilme mit Live-Musikbegleitung.
Arsenal konzentriert sich seit Langem auf radikale, politische und feministische Werke sowie auf Arbeiten aus Ländern der Globalen Majority countries. Mehrere dieser Filme haben unseren langjährigen Programmzyklus „žena růže píseň kost“ bereichert, der sich auf feministische Perspektiven und Autorinnen konzentriert. Als Haupttitel für unser Kooperationsprogramm haben wir Badnam Basti ausgewählt – ein perfektes Beispiel dafür, wie die Sammlung von Arsenal weiterhin zur Neubewertung und Wiederentdeckung des globalen Filmerbes beiträgt. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Kuratorin und Filmemacherin Apoorva Satish haben wir beschlossen, Badnam Basti mit Devdas zu kombinieren, einem Hindi-Film aus unserer eigenen Sammlung, der ursprünglich 1956 beim Karlovy Vary Festival gezeigt wurde. Wir danken dem Goethe-Institut für die Unterstützung des Programms, das unter anderem deutsche Kulturinstitutionen in ihrer Rolle als Initiatoren inspirierender transnationaler Austausche und Kooperationen präsentiert.
Ponrepo, screening hall of the Národní filmový archiv, is located in Bio Konvikt, historically valuable jesuit refectory Konvikt, reconstructed in the nineties of the last century. Konvikt hall became one of the main cultural centres in Prague at the end of the 18th century. This tradition continued also in the 19th century. Ponrepo is currently one of the last cinemas in the Czech Republic that still screens films from original prints, especially from the NFA collections. Its program also features key contemporary works, experimental cinema, cult classics, and silent films accompanied by live music.
Arsenal has long been focusing its attention on radical, political, and feminist works or works from Global Majority countries. Several of these films have enriched our long-running program cycle "žena růže píseň kost",which focuses on feminist perspectives and authors. As the main title for our collaborative programme we have chosen Badnam Basti, a perfect example of how Arsenal’s collection continues to contribute to re-appraisals and re-discoveries of global film heritage. In collaboration with curator and filmmaker Apoorva Satish, we decided to accompany Badnam Basti with Devdas, a Hindi film from our own collection, originally shown at the Karlovy Vary festival in 1956. We would like to thank the Goethe Institute for supporting the program, which, among other things, showcases German cultural institutions in their role as initiators of inspiring transnational exchanges and collaborations.
