Slovenian Cinematheque: Politische Filme aus dem Arsenal-Archiv
Wie das Arsenal ist die Kinoteka Slovenska in Ljubljana mehr als ein Sammlungsort und eine Abspielstätte für Filme. Sie ist Kino und Museum, bietet vielfältige Bildungsangebote an, gibt Bücher und Zeitschriften heraus, restauriert Filme und schafft Räume der Begegnung. Arsenal on Location ist dort mit einer Auswahl von politischen Filmen aus dem Arsenal-Archiv zu Gast. Ein Schwerpunkt sind die Filme des afroamerikanischen Regisseurs Billy Woodberry, eine der Schlüsselfiguren der sogenannten L.A. Rebellion.
NOW! (Santiago Álvarez, CUB 1965) ist ein Found-Footage-Film bestehend aus Fotos der Bürgerrechtsbewegung der USA der 60er Jahre. Der heimlich in Johannesburg gedrehte COME BACK, AFRICA (Lionel Rogosin, ZAF/USA 1958) erzählt von den Lebensumständen der schwarzen Bevölkerung im Apartheidsstaat Südafrika. MARSEILLE APRÈS LA GUERRE (Billy Woodberry, USA 2015) ist ein poetisches Porträt der Hafenarbeiter Marseilles nach dem 2. Weltkrieg. BLESS THEIR LITTLE HEARTS (Billy Woodberry, USA 1983) kreist um einen Familienvater in South Central Los Angeles, dem die Deindustrialisierung die Existenzgrundlage zu entziehen droht. MONANGAMBEEE (Sarah Maldoror, DZA 1969) ist ein kurzer Film über den antikolonialen Befreiungskampf in Angola, über Solidarität und Widerstand. MARIO (Billy Woodberry, PRT/F 2024) folgt Leben und Vermächtnis von Mário Pinto de Andrade (1928–1990), dem Gründer des Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) und Ehemann von Sarah Maldoror. THE SECOND JOURNEY (TO ULURU) (Corinne & Arthur Cantrill, AUS 1981) nähert sich der 500 Millionen alten Gesteinsformation, dem heiligsten Ort der Indigenen Australiens. NUESTRA VOZ DE TIERRA, MEMORIA Y FUTURO (Marta Rodríguez, Jorge Silva, COL 1981) ist ein zentrales Werk des politischen Kinos Lateinamerikas, das in der indigenen Kultur eine Ästhetik des Widerstands findet. TECHQUA IKACHI – LAND, MEIN LEBEN (Anka Schmid, Agnes Barmettler, James Danaqyumptewa, BRD/CH 1989) erzählt die Geschichte der Hopi in Arizona in ihrer eigenen Sicht- und Denkweise und in einer Collage aus Film, Fotografie und Malerei. In MES VOISINS (Med Hondo, F 1971) sprechen afrikanische Migranten in Paris über ihr Leben und den Rassismus auf dem Arbeits- und Wohnungsmarkt.
Like Arsenal, the Slovenska Kinoteka in Ljubljana is more than a place for collecting and screening films. It is a cinema and a museum, offers diverse educational programs, publishes books and magazines, restores films, and creates spaces for encounters. Arsenal on Location is a guest there with a selection of political films from the Arsenal archive. A focus is on the films of the African American director Billy Woodberry, one of the key figures of the so-called L.A. Rebellion.
NOW! (Santiago Álvarez, CUB 1965) is a found-footage film composed of photographs from the U.S. civil rights movement of the 1960s. Secretly filmed in Johannesburg, COME BACK, AFRICA (Lionel Rogosin, ZAF/USA 1958) tells of the living conditions of the Black population in apartheid-era South Africa. MARSEILLE APRÈS LA GUERRE (Billy Woodberry, USA 2015) is a poetic portrait of the dockworkers of Marseille after World War II. BLESS THEIR LITTLE HEARTS (Billy Woodberry, USA 1983) revolves around a father in South Central Los Angeles whose livelihood is threatened by deindustrialization. MONANGAMBEEE (Sarah Maldoror, DZA 1969) is a short film about the anti-colonial liberation struggle in Angola, about solidarity and resistance. MARIO (Billy Woodberry, PRT/F 2024) follows the life and legacy of Mário Pinto de Andrade (1928–1990), founder of the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) and husband of Sarah Maldoror. THE SECOND JOURNEY (TO ULURU) (Corinne & Arthur Cantrill, AUS 1981) approaches the 500-million-year-old rock formation, the most sacred site of the Indigenous people of Australia. NUESTRA VOZ DE TIERRA, MEMORIA Y FUTURO (Marta Rodríguez, Jorge Silva, COL 1981) is a central work of Latin American political cinema, which finds in Indigenous culture an aesthetics of resistance. TECHQUA IKACHI – LAND, MY LIFE (Anka Schmid, Agnes Barmettler, James Danaqyumptewa, FRG/CH 1989) tells the story of the Hopi in Arizona from their own perspective and worldview, in a collage of film, photography, and painting. In MES VOISINS (Med Hondo, F 1971), African migrants in Paris speak about their lives and about racism in the labor and housing markets.

Das Programm in der Kinoteka Slovenia, das einige politische Filme aus dem Archiv des Arsenals präsentierte, stieß auf viel Interesse, vor allem die Filme BLESS THEIR LITTLE HEARTS
(Billy Woodberry, USA 1983), NUESTRA VOZ DE TIERRA, MEMORIA Y FUTURO (Marta Rodríguez, Jorge Silva, Kolumbien 1981), Techqua Ikachi – Land, mein Leben (Land my life) (Anka Schmid, Agnes Barmettler, James Danaqyumptewa, D/Schweiz 1989) und LA ZERDA ET LES CHANTS DE L'OUBLI (Assia Djebar, Algerien 1982) wurden mit Begeisterung aufgenommen und waren Entdeckungen für das Publikum. Neben den Mitarbeitern der Kintoeka, dem Projektraum SCCA_Ljubljana und Vertretern des Goethe-Institutes war ein vor allem jungen Publikum zu gegen, doch auch einige Filmemacher*innen und Kurator*innen aus Ljublijana. The programme at Kinoteka Slovenia, which presented several political films from the Arsenal archives, attracted a great deal of interest, especially the films BLESS THEIR LITTLE HEARTS (Billy Woodberry, USA 1983), NUESTRA VOZ DE TIERRA, MEMORIA Y FUTURO (Marta Rodríguez, Jorge Silva, Colombia 1981), Techqua Ikachi – Land, mein Leben (Land my life) (Anka Schmid, Agnes Barmettler, James Danaqyumptewa, Germany/Switzerland 1989) and LA ZERDA ET LES CHANTS DE L'OUBLI (Assia Djebar, Algeria 1982) were received with enthusiasm and were discoveries for the audience. In addition to the staff of Kintoeka, the SCCA_Ljubljana project space and representatives of the Goethe-Institut, the audience consisted mainly of young people, but also included some filmmakers and curators from Ljubljana. Die Slowenische Kinemathek, gegründet von der Republik Slowenien, ist nicht einfach ein Kino, in dem wir uns mit Filmgeschichte auseinandersetzen und immer noch das Surren von Filmrollen hören. Es ist mehr als nur ein Ort an dem wir durch die Dunkelheit in eine andere Realität willkommen geheißen werden und im Schein eines Lichtes, das nur für uns bestimmt ist, in eine Welt eintauchen, die uns emotional berührt. Die Slowenische Kinemathek ist viel mehr als das.
Ein nationales Museum, in dem wir die Kunst von Filmen durch Ausstellungen erkunden können, sie als kulturelles Erbe für uns entdecken können, und sie anhand einer umfangreichen Filmsammlung und sorgsam konservierten Filmobjekten, die in der Vergangenheit genutzt wurden, um filmische Illusionen zu schaffen, wertschätzen können.
Es ist das größte Klassenzimmer, das der Kunst des Bewegtbildes gewidmet ist, wo neugierige Personen aller Altersklassen, besonders junge Menschen, denen filmische Kunst nur selten in Schulen begegnet, über die historischen, technologischen, ästhetischen, sozialen und theoretischen Aspekte des Filmemachens und des Filmeschauens lernen können.
Sloweniens umfangreichste Bibliothek mit einem Fokus auf Filmliteratur wird ergänzt durch eine Medienbibliothek und ein Verlagshaus, das Literatur zu Film für sowohl professionelle als auch breite Leserschaften.
Ein Labor stellt sicher, dass die Kunst des Films den Wandel der Zeit übersteht, der unweigerlich einen Einfluss auf die Filmrollen und somit auch unsere historische Erinnerung hat. Die Kinemathek restauriert zudem auch Filme und trägt somit zur Konservierung von filmischen Erbe bei.
Es ist eines der schönsten Museen in der Küstenregion von Karst. In Divača, dem Geburtsort von Ida Kravanja – Ita Rina, eine international bekannte Prominente des europäischen Stillfilms – haben wir in Zusammenarbeit mit der Gemeinde Divača ein Museum der Slowenischen Filmdarstellenden auf dem renovierten Škratelj Hof gegründet. Das Museum hat auch eine Daueraustellung zu Ita Rina.
Das sind nur ein paar Gründe, weswegen man uns in der Miklošičeva Straße 28 in Ljubljana besuchen sollte. Dort kann man auch Filme gucken, um seinen Horizont zu erweitern oder einfach einen besseren Tag zu haben. Oder einen Kaffee trinken, Ekran lesen – ein professionelles Filmmagazin, das wir schon seit Jahrzehnten veröffentlichen – sich eine Ausstellung anschauen, durch den Museumsshop schlendern oder das ein oder andere Buch mit nach Hause nehmen. Oder vielleicht auch in die atemberaubende Karstregion reisen und dort das Museum der Slowenischen Filmdarstellenden besuchen.
The Slovenian Cinematheque, established by the Republic of Slovenia, is not merely a cinema where we engage with film history and still hear the hum of the film reel. It is more than just a place where, through the darkness, we are welcomed into another reality and, in a beam of light meant just for us, are immersed in a world that stirs our emotions.
The Slovenian Cinematheque is much more.
A national museum where we can explore the art of film through exhibitions, discover it as cultural heritage, and appreciate it with the help of a rich film collection and carefully preserved film-related objects, used in the past to create cinematic illusions.
The largest classroom dedicated to the art of moving images, where curious individuals of all ages, especially young people who rarely encounter film art in schools, learn about the historical, technological, aesthetic, social, and theoretical aspects of filmmaking and film reception.
Slovenia’s most extensive library specializing in film literature, complemented by a media library and a publishing house dedicated to producing both professional and general-interest literature on film.
A laboratory that ensures the art of film resists the passage of time, which inevitably takes its toll on film reels and, with them, our historical memory. At the Cinematheque, films are also restored, contributing to the preservation of cinematic heritage.
One of the most beautiful museums in the Coastal-Karst region. In Divača, the birthplace of Ida Kravanja – Ita Rina, an internationally renowned star of European silent cinema – we have established the Museum of Slovenian Film Actors in the renovated Škratelj Homestead, in collaboration with the Municipality of Divača. The museum also features a permanent exhibition dedicated to Ita Rina.
