Verfilmte Stadt: Berlin
Berlin – eine Stadt der Brüche, Leerstellen und ständigen Veränderung – war schon immer Schauplatz und Projektionsfläche filmischer Erzählungen. Die Reihe zeigt ausgewählte dokumentarische Positionen, die poetische und persönliche Stadterkundungen in den Fokus rücken. Dabei treten periphere Räume ins Zentrum und dominante Stadtbilder treten in den Hintergrund. Gerade in der langen Phase der Wende wird die Kamera für beide zum Instrument der Erkundung und Reflexion.
Besonders hervorzuheben sind die selten gezeigten Filme von Irena Vrkljan und Chetna Vora: Vrkljan kam aus dem damaligen Jugoslawien an die DFFB im Westen, Vora aus Indien an die HFF in Potsdam-Babelsberg im Osten. Ihre Arbeiten eröffnen multiperspektivische Blicke auf die urbane Topografie und soziale Realitäten einer geteilten Stadt.
Die Dokumentarist*innen, Grenzgänger*innen und Kinoarbeiter*innen Lilly Grote, Cornelia Klauß, Gerd Kroske und Annette Lingg im B-Movie werden im B-Movie Hamburg von ihren Erkundungen berichten.

Berlin – a city shaped by rupture, absence, and constant transformation – has always served as both setting and projection surface for cinematic narratives. This series presents selected documentary works that place poetic and personal explorations of the city at their center. Peripheral spaces move into focus, while dominant urban images recede into the background. Especially during the long period of transition around reunification, the camera became a tool for both investigation and reflection.
Particular highlights are the rarely screened films by Irena Vrkljan and Chetna Vora: Vrkljan came from what was then Yugoslavia to study at the DFFB in the West, while Vora arrived from India to study at the HFF in Potsdam-Babelsberg in the East. Their works offer multi-perspective views of the urban topography and social realities of a divided city.
The documentary filmmakers, border crossers, and cinema workers Lilly Grote, Cornelia Klauß, Gerd Kroske, and Annette Lingg will tell stories about their explorations at B-Movie Hamburg.

Seit 1987 befindet sich das B-Movie in einem Hinterhof auf St. Pauli und ist eine feste Größe in Hamburgs unabhängiger Kinolandschaft. Komplett ehrenamtlich organisiert, bietet das Kino mit seinem günstigen Eintritt und bezahlbaren Getränken einen offenen Raum für alle Film- und Kulturinteressierten.
Das kuratierte Monatsprogramm setzt auf wechselnde thematische Schwerpunkte, unterschiedliche Perspektiven und verbindet künstlerische Handschriften, Genreanalysen und regionale Fokusse stets mit politischen und kulturellen Fragestellungen. Gezeigt wurden zuletzt u. a. Werkschauen von Kristina Konrad, Friederike Pezold und Khavn de la Cruz sowie Programme mit Fokus auf Iran oder Tansania (mit dem Kollektiv ajabu ajabu). Neben digitalen Formaten zeigen wir gerne analoge Filmprogramme (8mm, 16mm und 35mm).
Kooperationen mit Initiativen und Communities aus verschiedensten Kontexten erweitern das Programm ebenso wie zahlreiche Sonderveranstaltungen: Gehörlosenkino für Kids, der Dokumentarfilmsalon auf St. Pauli, queere Filmabende (Q-Movie Bar), experimentelle Hörformate, Comic-Lesungen, Konzerte und Performances machen das B-Movie zu einem einzigartigen Ort für kulturellen Austausch und künstlerische Vielfalt.
Since 1987, B-Movie has been a staple of Hamburg’s independent cultural scene, in a backyard in St. Pauli. Run entirely by volunteers, the cinema offers an open and accessible space for all film and culture enthusiasts – with affordable ticket prices and reasonably priced drinks.
The curated monthly program focuses on changing thematic priorities and diverse perspectives, blending artistic signatures, genre explorations, and regional spotlights with political and cultural questions. Retrospectives have included the works of Kristina Konrad, Friederike Pezold, and Khavn de la Cruz, as well as programs centering on Iran or Tanzania (in collaboration with the Dar es Salaam-based collective ajabu ajabu). Alongside digital formats, we are committed to screen analog film – 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm.
Collaborations with a wide range of initiatives further enrich the program. Special events such as sign language supported Kids’ Screenings, the St. Pauli Documentary Salon, queer film nights (Q-Movie Bar), experimental sound formats, comic readings, concerts, and performances make B-Movie a unique venue for cultural exchange and artistic diversity.
